“SILENT VOICES” - SAUTI NYAMAVU

A PHOTO EXHIBITION BY PARTICIPANTS OF THE EFFECTIVE RURAL PHOTOJOURNALISM COACHINGPROJECT 2010/11

Flame Tree Media Trust has, for past one year, implemented the Effective Rural Photojournalism Coaching project, by funding from Tanzania Media Fund (TMF). The project aimed at empowering regional photojournalists with the skills that they might use to visualize grass-root issues by powerful photographic images.

The photojournalists were coached on how to generate ideas, select approach and visualize them, as we can witness this exhibition today.

The objectives of the project among others, are; to support quality journalism and to develop the skills of the Tanzanian photographers and writing journalists, so that their work can contribute to improved quality of the media content, better policies and good governance in the country.

The coaching covered the following regions: Lindi, Iringa, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Zanzibar and Kigoma in a period of one year beginning May 2010. The project has produced a year wall calendar of 2011, this photo exhibition and a book, which is still in the publishing process.

The complete set of this exhibition is comprised of 54 posters with a total of 446 photographs. We believe, it is the first big mobile photo exhibition to have been produced and shown within the country. More importantly, it focuses on the different grassroots’ issues in our most known rural communities.

ERPC future plans

ERPC second phase is to curate an exhibition to tour some regions and produce a photo book that will show case all participant's work by next year.

The program funded by Tanzania media Fund coached sixty press club members from six regions, namely: Lindi, Iringa, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Zanzibar and Kigoma.

Education sector in Tanzania faces many challenges, among them is desks, many primary school lacks school desks, Mahanga Primary School at Ilagala Ward, Kigoma Rural is no exception, Kasimu Msoma a Veteran Kigoma Journalist shade lights on this challange.

Jacob Luvilo, Radio and Television journalist deals with Teachers housing challenges in Kigoma region that forced some teachers to live in the school offices as the case with Reli Mpya Primary School at Nyangabo Village in Nguruka Ward.

Mkoa wa Kigoma unakabiliwa na changamoto nyingi lakini kubwa ni usafiri.

Train ndio kimbilio na msaada mkubwa kwa walio wengi, toka (1918 tangu reli hiyo ilipoanzishwa) enzi na enzi kutokana na unafuu wake.

Pamoja na kuwa ni tegemeo, usafiri huu unakabiliwa na changamoto za hapa na pale ikiwa ni pamoja na ukosefu wa huduma bora za usafiri,uchakavu wa mabehewa pamoja na njia ya reli ambayo ni ya muda mrefu.

Katika miaka ya hivi karibuni nchi yetu imekumbwa na wimbi la mauaji ya walemavu wa ngozi (Albino), ambayo chanzo chake kikubwa ni imani potofu za kishirikina kwa baadhi ya wanajamii, wenye kupenda utajiri wa haraka.

Hali hiyo imesababisha baadhi ya Albino nchini kulazimika kuishi katika vituo mbali mbali, mbali na jamii yao kwa kuhofia usalama wao.

Katika kipindi cha miaka kumi na sita tangu mwaka 1993 hadi 2010, kumekuwa kukiripotiwa taarifa mbalimbali za ujambazi na mauaji ya wananchi yanayofanywa na watu wanaotajwa kuwa majambazi sugu wanaotumia silaha za moto kufanya uporaji katika barabara mbalimbali na maeneo ya makazi na biashara hapa nchini.

Katika kipindi cha mwaka 2006 na 2007 jumla ya matukio ya mauaji 3583 sawa na asilimia 37.2 yaliripotiwa kwa jeshi la polisi na mengi kati ya hayo yanatajwa kusababishwa na watu kuwania mali, ubakaji, mauaji ya kishirikina, ujambazi wa utekaji wa magari na uvunjaji pamoja na wivu wa kimapenzi.

Katika wilaya ya Kibondo mkoani Kigoma wastani wa matukio 10 hadi 20 hutokea kila mwaka na kusababisha vifo vya watu na upotevu mkubwa wa mali unaofanywa na majambazi ambao huteka mgari na kuwashambulia abiria kwa risasi kwa lengo la kupora mali.

Prosper Kwigize aliangalia kwa undani tatizo hilo ikiwa ni pamoja na familia zilizokubwa na kadhia hii huko Kibondo, Kigoma.

Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that creates timeliness, objective and narrative images in order to tell a news story.

We at FTMT hope that our newspapers in the future will venture into this kind of visual reporting and shade lights into grass root issues in our society.

Photojournalism has the power to shape and change our society via issues raised.
