Since the introduction of multipart system in early 1990s, the politics of Zanzibar have been marked by repeated clashes between two political parties, CCM and CUF.
Contested elections in late 2000 led to a massacre in Zanzibar in January 2001 when the government shot into crowds of protestors, killing more than twenty people and injuring about 600. Sharifa Rashid Said interviewed the some of the widows and victims in Pemba.
