A large proportion of the Zanzibar export earnings come from cloves. The greatest concentration of clove trees is found on Pemba, as growing conditions here are superior to those on Unguja Island.

During the clove blooming season, visitors are welcomed by the scents of cloves or “marashi ya karafuu” and the songs of honeybees looking for nectar.
